This nephew of mine is amazing. Just have a good look at these captivating horses with their Picasso-esque perspective and charming style.
Drawing is as natural to Lars as breathing. He understands composition instinctively and he has complete confidence when he makes art; he knows with certainty that every mark he makes is just where it should be.
He also has something that many artists strive for, a distinct and recognizable style.
In a recent phone conversation he told me he feels good when he draws, and said he draws what's in his head and what's in his heart. "It's my meditation," Lars says.
He attended community art classes as well as an Art History class at the University of Lethbridge. His mixed-media works have been shown in solo and group exhibitions in Swift Current, Lethbridge and Pincher Creek. Sue Wilkie, a fellow artist and mentor, has worked with him for 3 years, adding to his experience in plein air painting, crafts, gardening and cooking.
As well as being a visual artist, this guy is also a talented dancer. He was part of an innovative theatre production called Unlimited presented by the University of Lethbridge in 2015, with a cast of 22 students of mixed abilities. I saw this large-scale extravaganza, an exciting and imaginative show that had the flavour of Cirque du Soleil. Any disabilities of the performers were invisible to the audience throughout the flurry of fun, and the professionalism, on the stage.
Lars, who has Down's Syndrome, is 37 years old and lives in Lethbridge, Alberta. He is a romantic, a writer, a man of ideas. People know him as an affectionate person who is inquisitive, hard working and courteous.
There's no doubt about it, this man is a talented artist. He expresses his ideas in a beautiful and original way, and shows commitment to his work by drawing everyday. Congratulations Lars, for all the successes you've had and good luck for many more in your future!
