I wouldn’t normally go to a car museum; I’d be more likely to wait in the parking lot with a book. But in 2018 when we were driving across Newfoundland I went into Vernon’s Car Museum, and wow, I loved it!

In this tiny coastal town we discovered a spectacular world-class collection of some 60 vintage cars. It was so unexpected, so brightly lit and shining, and with such lovingly restored vehicles. Many were rare and all were in pristine condition. They were like art objects.

I have a bond with the owner too. Vernon Smith and I are both natives of Swift Current. His museum is in Swift Current, Newfoundland, where he was born and raised. My native city, and where I still live, is Swift Current, Saskatchewan.

The sign out front is unassuming, but don’t let that fool you. Inside this 24,000 sq. ft. facility on a quiet little road in rural Newfoundland is a vintage car-lover’s dream.
